Best Management Practices

We are getting requests from homeowners to find out how to go about getting their properties in compliance with TRPA BMP requirements. Homeowners can call:
Nevada Tahoe Conservation District

Stateline, NV 89449-4605
775-586-1610
They will send out a representative and will do an individual home inspection (for free) and the homeowner can then contract what needs to be done. They can also issue the Compliance Certificate.

Wildfire Responses

Plan Ahead

  1. Plan an escape route from your house to the beach.
  2. Plan where to meet family members if separated.
  3. Keep a defensible space (30 feet) cleared around your house; remove dead trees and overhanging branches.  Keep stacked firewood away from house.
  4. Keep your roof, gutter and porches cleared of tree dropping and flammable material.
  5. Keep chimney properly screened with no branches within 15 feet of the chimney.
  6. Reduce the amount of fuel around your house.  thin trees to ten foot intervals, if possible.  Prune branches to 15 feet above the ground.
  7. If building or remodeling: use fire resistant materials, Class A fire retardant roofing materials, double paned windows. fire resistant draperies, smoke detectors.  Enclose under eave areas to avoid trapping embers and heat.
  8. Write the name and phone number of an outside friend or relative here.  Call them.

If They Occur

If Imminent Danger

  1. Dial 911: Collect family
  2. Alert and assist any disabled neighbor.
  3. Put on slow to ignite clothing (denim, leather, wool), long sleeves, long pants, boots, goggles, head covering, heavy duty gloves.
  4. Carry a wet towel.
  5. Notify outside friend or relative that you are evacuating the house for beach.
  6. Close exterior and interior doors; leave lights on inside and out, doors unlocked.
  7. Don't use car unless critical - keep our narrow roads clear for firefighting vehicles.
  8. Remember STOP, DROP and ROLL if clothing catches on fire.

If Time Permits

  1. Put garage door on manual.
  2. Turn off propane at tank; turn off pilot lights.
  3. Close or cover attic and basement vents.
  4. Put combustible patio furniture inside.
  5. Keep flammable curtains open or take down to reduce exposure to heat.
  6. Move furniture away from uncovered windows.
  7. Close metal blinds or fireproof curtains.
  8. Put shovels/rakes outside, prop ladders on side of house away from fire for firefighters.
  9. Place water hoses around the house, with spray nozzles attached and water turned on.
  10. Place water in garbage cans, buckets, etc. for firefighting.
